Two ways to fix a broken sewer line

When a plumber tells you your sewer line is failing, they will usually offer one of two paths. The first is trenchless repair, which fixes or replaces the pipe through small access points without digging up the whole line. The second is traditional excavation, often called dig-and-replace, where a crew opens a trench along the pipe and swaps out the damaged section.

Both can produce a sound, lasting repair. The right choice depends on the condition of your pipe, what sits above it, and how the numbers work out once you have an inspection in hand. Here is how to think it through before you approve any work.

What trenchless repair actually involves

Trenchless is a category, not a single method. The two most common versions are worth understanding because a contractor may quote one or the other.

Cured-in-place pipe lining

With pipe lining, a crew feeds a resin-soaked liner into your existing pipe and inflates it against the old walls. The resin hardens and forms a new pipe inside the old one. It works well when the original pipe is cracked or leaking but still holds its shape and alignment. Because the liner follows the existing path, there is no need to open a long trench.

Pipe bursting

Pipe bursting is used when the old pipe is too damaged to line. A cone-shaped head is pulled through the line, breaking the old pipe outward while dragging a new pipe in behind it. Crews reach the line through a pit at each end rather than along its full length. This is a common choice when a pipe has collapsed or lost its slope.

Both methods need entry and exit points, so trenchless does not always mean zero digging. It means far less of it.

What dig-and-replace involves

Traditional excavation is the older approach, and for some situations it is still the correct one. A crew locates the pipe, digs a trench down to it, removes the failed section, and lays new pipe. Then they backfill and restore the surface.

The obvious cost is the disruption above ground. If the line runs under a driveway, a mature garden, or a slab, digging means tearing into that surface and rebuilding it afterward. The less obvious benefit is control. When the crew can see the whole line, they can correct a sagging belly, adjust the grade, and confirm the connection at the main. Some problems are easier to solve when the pipe is exposed rather than repaired from the inside.

When trenchless tends to be the better fit

Trenchless is usually worth asking about when the pipe underneath something you would rather not dig up. A finished driveway, a patio, a stand of old trees, or a foundation slab all raise the cost and hassle of open excavation, sometimes by a lot. Repairing from the inside leaves those surfaces alone.

It also tends to suit pipes that are damaged but still roughly where they should be. Cracks, small root intrusions, and leaks at joints are often good candidates for lining. Pipe bursting extends the range to pipes that are more broken, as long as the path is clear enough to pull a new line through.

The catch is that not every pipe qualifies. A line that has shifted badly, sagged, or been crushed flat may not accept a liner or a bursting head. A camera inspection is what tells you whether trenchless is even on the table, which is why any honest quote starts there.

When digging is still the right call

Excavation earns its place when the pipe needs more than a new surface. If the line has lost its slope and water no longer drains the way it should, someone has to re-lay it at the correct grade, and that usually means digging. The same goes for a pipe that has separated at a joint or collapsed in a spot where a liner cannot bridge the gap.

Access matters too. If the line is shallow and runs under bare lawn, opening a trench may be quicker and cheaper than setting up for a trenchless job. And if the crew finds several problems along one run, replacing the whole section outright can be simpler than patching each fault from the inside.

The inspection comes first, every time

No one should quote a repair method before putting a camera down your line. A video inspection shows where the damage is, how bad it is, and whether the pipe still holds its shape. That footage is what separates a real recommendation from a guess.

Ask to see the recording yourself. A contractor who repairs and replaces sewer lines should be able to walk you through what the camera found and explain why they are steering you toward one method over the other. If a company pushes a single approach for every job without looking inside the pipe, treat that as a reason to get a second opinion.

Questions worth asking before you sign

A few plain questions will tell you a lot about whether a quote is solid.

The answers should be specific to your pipe, not a general sales pitch. A contractor who has actually looked at your line can point to what the camera showed and tie the plan to it.

Making the call

There is no single winner between trenchless and dig-and-replace. Trenchless protects the surface above the pipe and often means a faster return to normal, but it needs a pipe that can accept it. Excavation is more disruptive, yet it gives the crew full control over grade and alignment when the pipe needs real reconstruction.

Start with the inspection, get the method matched to what the camera actually shows, and ask for the quote in writing before anyone breaks ground. A repair chosen that way tends to hold up, whichever route you take.
